 U.S. Virgin Islands Recreation
Is there a better place on Earth to step on deck and enjoy the crystal blue water as it surrounds you? The U.S. Virgin Islands are world-renowned for its pristine waters, welcoming coves and fantastic tradewinds that guide you to our many little islands perfect for exploration. These options aren’t few and far between—they seem to be everywhere around the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The popularity of boating continues to grow in the U.S. Virgin Islands and the water’s around our islands practically beckon us to set sail. Novices to this favorite island pastime are encouraged to take a boating safety course offered by various local organizations and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, and even experienced captains should keep in mind that dangerous squalls can appear quickly. Boating enthusiasts also enjoy several yacht clubs that offer club privileges and sponsor a number of races throughout the year. Popular races include the St. Croix International Regatta in February and the Rolex Cup Regatta, which attracts competitive boaters from the United States and the Caribbean, to show their skills over the Easter weekend. Of course, charters are available for those who don’t have their own vessel or would enjoy letting someone else do all of the work while the other’s get to play.

Fishing opportunities are just as plentiful as the exciting ways to explore the sea. The waters here are without doubt some of the greatest for reeling in tuna, marlin, kingfish and even more varieties of fish onto a boat. Fishing tournaments are held regularly throughout the year, but highlights include the Johnny Harms’ Tournament Series, held every year on St. Thomas between July and October. Fishing by hook or hands doesn’t require a license, but spearfishing is prohibited in any waters in the Virgin Islands National Park jurisdiction.

With all of the beautiful waters surrounding our islands, other aquatic recreational activities have received equal attention from visitors and residents alike. Scuba divers find the U.S. Virgin Islands to be among the world’s best destinations when you consider the unspoiled coral reefs and many underwater caves here. Snorkelers delight at St. Croix’s Buck Island Reef National Monument, one of only two underwater monuments in the entire U.S., and St. John’s Virgin Islands National Park is often mentioned among the top places to have a look below the surface. St. Thomas residents enjoy taking snorkeling tours through Magens Bay and the St. Thomas Marine Sanctuary. Be sure to check out a great map of fantastic diving places by clicking here!

Additionally, the U.S. Virgin Islands have all of the other recreational options you know and love. Hiking, biking, kayaking, horseback riding and tennis are complimented by world-class golf courses, some designed by Robert Trent Jones and Tom Fazio. No matter what your thrill is, you are sure to find it right here in the sunny weather of the U.S. Virgin Islands.
